Old Hippie’s Medicine Chest (or, Canna Caps Revealed)

Old Hippie's Medicine Chest and Collection of Canna Caps

So, you want to know how to get through your day using cannabis, but without smoking, without vaping, and without getting too stoned to work? What you need, friend, are Canna Caps, which are made by extracting cannabinoids from ground medical marijuana into coconut oil. Once you start working with these, you will want to make different types for every occasion like I did, and you will soon see why!

Canna Caps Can Cure!

Left to right, starting on the top row, we have:

  • Purple Kush: The all-time favorite in the Hippie household, we call it PK for short. It’s a solid indica that helps with anxiety and panic attacks, as well as aches and pains and helping you sleep. This particular batch was made for Felicity, as they are way too strong for me. They get her somewhere between a [4] and [8], depending on her stress level (her tolerance for edibles is approximately twice mine).
  • AVB Extract: this is a special run of AVB oil extract capsules I made for experiments after the weird stuff that happened in this article. (There will be a followup article on these, but no exam 🙂
  • LA Confidential: made from another classic indica, LA Conf capsules are great for general purpose stress removal. This particular batch was a leetle bit too strong for daily use, at least for me ([4] under stress, [6] otherwise), but Felicity loves them.
  • Harlequin: the last of some of this magic stuff that I acquired two years or so ago. Harlequin is very high in CBD and near-legendary for pain relief. It’s hard to find these days (Fuck Thank you Obama!), so we use these only on special occasions.
  • Super CBD (and Super CBD Tail): I managed to get a load of stems, branches, and even some roots that would have been thrown out otherwise, after hearing that these parts of the cannabis plant have a higher CBD:THC ratio than other parts. So I basically washed them in alcohol, then mixed the alcohol with coconut oil, heated the mixture until all the alcohol boiled off, and the result was put into these capsules, intended for use against pain as a backup to the Harlequin. The “tail” bottle was made at the tail end of this process, when I noticed that the liquid hadn’t been mixed constantly and so was deeper in color and likely stronger. Experiment in progress.

And on the bottom row:

  • Pot Luck: I once made some capsules from a random batch of leaves, and they didn’t turn out too strong, so I knew there was some oomph left in the plant material, and stuffed that directly into the capsules. Because of that, they’re not quite consistent in effects, so I take them only occasionally.
  • Catnip: these are an experimental extraction, made just like regular Canna Caps, except starting with catnip rather than cannabis. They definitely work to calm me down, though they’re not very strong, but I take them for an extra boost of calmness when I’m experiencing anxiety. Great for visiting the dentist along with Purple Kush or LA Confidential!
  • LA Conf Lite: these are from the batch I made for myself, and I often use them during the day. They get me quite reliably to [2.5], plus or minus 1/2 level every time within 45 minutes, and last 4 to 6 hours. They help me relax without affecting my work or making me feel high.
  • Oil Dregs: pretty much the same as “Pot Luck”, just from a different batch.
  • Mt. Everest Skunk: I got some of this strain on sale from a long-departed dispensary. I liked the effects well enough, but I hated the taste, even vaping in my trusty MFLB, so I turned it all into capsules!
  • Odyssey: this is a 50/50 indica/sativa hybrid that is very popular in Northern California. I use it when I’m looking for an effect from capsules similar to my usual mixing of Sour Diesel (sativa) with a strong indica for vaping. It’s good for working because the sativa gives you an energetic feeling. I don’t use it all the time, though, because its average potency is around [3.5] for me and I have to be in the right frame of mind to deal with that level.

Canna Caps Strength Secret

If you’ve read all the way down to here, you deserve to learn the secret of how I make the different strengths, and it’s simple: I look at the depth of the color of the oil. Dark green: strong. Light green: weaker. You obviously need some experience, and you have to look at the oil the same way every time against the same background, but you can get the hang of it in 3 or 4 tries.

Old Hippie is a father of two boys and thankfully living in California where all this kind of thing is legal. He started smoking marijuana in 1967 in high school, experimented with mind-expanding drugs of all kinds, and then straightened out 15 or so years later to become an airplane pilot. After being diagnosed with depression in 2000, he lost his job and most of the following decade to prescription medications (such as antidepressants) which sapped his energy and will. Finally, a chance conversation with a friend led to a doctor’s recommendation for medical marijuana (MMJ). This changed his entire life, health, and outlook for the better. BeyondChronic.com is his continuing story. It’s also his way to provide experienced advice on using medical marijuana effectively and responsibly, as well as advocacy, activism, and support for others. Old Hippie teaches about safe use of cannabis edibles, Canna Caps, vaporizers, dosing, and even microdosing.

Good afternoon, OH !!! I am wondering, as far as oils that contain CBD in them are concerned, which is more effective towards killing my pain? To Vape them or to put them under one’s tongue?
Thank you, Elizabeth

A very good question! First, you should make sure that the oil in question is actually concentrated CBD and nothing else, as it could be dangerous to inhale vaporized oil of other kinds. If your product is made from hemp, please read the label carefully. As far as which method is better…You’d really be best advised to try all methods available and see which works best for you.

Hi

as far as my wife is concerned CBD does not need THC for pain. She has been taking CBD capsules for this person for the last 5 months. She has been able to cut the the number of medications she has to take for her pain related to diabetes and fibromyalgia dramatically. the man who runs the site is a chemical engineer and started doing this because he needed the product. he is a great person and really cares. No THC in it and he has the documentation to prove it. It has allowed my wife to reduce the amount of prescription pain medications she is taking by half. no I am not affiliated with this company other then to be a happy customer

‘Mornin’, OH! I hope you are feeling well; you certainly help others feel well, don’t you? ❤️
As you know, lots of oils have CBD in them. Some ‘sales people’ say that the CBD needs a significant amount of THC, in order for it to be effective in killing pain. . Other sales people say ‘no, CBD needs little, if any, THC to be effective.’ The two sellers rant back & forth. Each claims the other is false. One also says that the other is just saying that, in order to make a sell.
What do YOU think, OH? Does CBD oil need THC to kill pain or can it act alone?
Thank you!

Both, actually.

CBD mostly works on neuropathic (nerve) pain, while THC works on most other pain. So if you have anxiety or seizure issues or pure neuropathic pain, then CBD alone is sufficient. Otherwise (and especially for severe headaches/migraines), you’re better off with both THC and CBD.

And thanks for the kind words, you are very cheery! Nugs and hugs!

Interesting, OH !!! Thanks for your reply. 🙂
I’m thinking I might not need THC, since I don’t have migraines or headaches.
I have neuropathy, rheumatoid arthritis, & myofachia pain. Since I have the above 3, do you think OH, that I might not need much THC? Thank you!
Also, I hope you & yours are having a FABULOUS Columbus Day! The Best, Elizabeth Beene

Well, arthritis responds well to THC, but you could first try the CBD and then maybe try it with ibuprofen or something if necessary…it’s more legal! 🙂

Eating it or “making tea” would not do anything, but if you made oil like in our Canna Caps article, it would extract/dissolve any CBD that may be in there so it will work on you. I caution you not to expect too much, but at least you’ll get some experience working with the plant. Best of luck!

I have been making and taking tincture for about 5 years. I make it with olive oil in a pressure cooker. I made a batch of Skywalker and it is too strong. If I add olive oil, do I have to heat it up again?
