Max THC Headroom and Coconut Oil

Someone on Reddit just asked me a question, one that I’ve heard many times before in different ways, and my answer has always been “I don’t really know”. But the more I thought about it, the confuseder I got.

The question was, “What’s the maximum amount of THC you can dissolve in vegetable oil (like butter or coconut oil)?”

I know you can put a lot in there, because I once made Black Mamba capsules for my son out of something like 6 grams of flower into 2 tablespoons coconut oil. One of those capsules had him drooling and barking on the floor, if I remember correctly. But then I thought about concentrates.

Let’s do a thought experiment, in the tradition of Einstein and all those theoretical physics types.

Imagine a gram of hash oil. Say around 70% THC. Yes, yes, nice stuff there. Now decarboxylate it, and it’s essentially liquid. Probably around a teaspoon (5 ml).

Now imagine you’re going to mix it completely with an insanely small amount of warm coconut oil, say 2 ml.

What will you end up with? It’s surely 7 ml of something, and it has 700 mg. of THC in it, so it’s insanely strong at 100 mg/ml.

But it can’t be just coconut oil, because you only started with 2 ml of that.

So what is it? And how much THC did the coconut oil actually dissolve? And what is the upper limit, if any?

Old Hippie is a father of two boys and thankfully living in California where all this kind of thing is legal. He started smoking marijuana in 1967 in high school, experimented with mind-expanding drugs of all kinds, and then straightened out 15 or so years later to become an airplane pilot. After being diagnosed with depression in 2000, he lost his job and most of the following decade to prescription medications (such as antidepressants) which sapped his energy and will. Finally, a chance conversation with a friend led to a doctor’s recommendation for medical marijuana (MMJ). This changed his entire life, health, and outlook for the better. BeyondChronic.com is his continuing story. It’s also his way to provide experienced advice on using medical marijuana effectively and responsibly, as well as advocacy, activism, and support for others. Old Hippie teaches about safe use of cannabis edibles, Canna Caps, vaporizers, dosing, and even microdosing.

You don’t need much coconut oil. My preferred method is to extract using freezing bud and 190 alcohol, evaporate the 190 off in a 13×9 Pyrex dish, decarb at 240 for 40 minutes, then add in my coconut oil and lecithin. I usually do 60 grams at a time, which normally produces about 10 grams of oil. I add in one teaspoon of coconut oil, and one teaspoon of lecithin when it’s cooled down a little. Then I put it into a couple 10 ml oral syringes. I can do anything with it from there except inhalation. For that just leave out the coconut and lecithin.
An alternative is to screen the kief, decarb, and infuse into coconut oil. You can cram a lot of hash into a tablespoon of coconut oil. Use fractionated coconut oil and it could be used as a tincture.

Sounds like pretty good procedure, although I’d be very concerned about adding lecithin, and especially so much of it. Google “cardiac lecithin” for more info.

Ah, but that involves lecithin from eggs. I don’t use any animal products, including eggs. I actually think they were looking for a way to throw the bad light away from eggs themselves which are the single largest source of dietary cholesterol, thus a major contributor to the number one cause of death. The egg board is one of our most powerful lobbying groups. They will quite literally stop at nothing. Organic sunflower lecithin is easy to get now in powder or liquid as you probably know. Soy would be ok if it’s organic. Can’t be GMO that way.
Vegetable based lecithin is used throughout the body, and especially the brain. I believe in getting all my nutrition from whole plant foods, but processed items are nearly impossible to avoid. Trade offs happen. In this case I think the added bioavailability is worth it. Actually I feel exactly the same about the coconut oil. I don’t use oils in my foods either, even for cooking. They’re almost as bad as eggs.

Well I don’t know that I am either, although I’ve gone down that rabbit hole pretty deep and I’ve followed a whole food plant based lifestyle for five years now as a result. I’ve found more success with my immune system and neurological issues with diet than I have with anything else, including cannabis. Cannabis is still my one and only medicine, but it’s still mostly palliative care. Some of my symptoms have disappeared since I changed my diet and many others have lessened considerably. Hopefully with time they’ll go away too. I’ll still be using my vaporizer though lol.
This is the site that really helped get me going if anyone is interested. http://nutritionfacts.org
I hope you don’t mind the link O H, I’m not affiliated in any way, just paying it forward.
Thanks for the nugs and hugs, and back at ya. May you and yours have a wonderful holiday season!

Not at all! We had a saying back in the 60s I’m sure you’ve heard…”You are what you eat” (I always used that as a retort when someone called me a pussy LOL). Food and water are far more important than many people think about! I’ve gradually been trying to get to a healthier diet, and it’s definitely helped me, but it’s not easy changing habits of over a half century. Best to you and yours as well!

Well…this isn’t a recipe like the Canna Caps article, it’s a theoretical mental exercise. Anything like this would be way too strong for most people! But if you actually want to figure it out, just visit the page with all the formulas, where the second formula is what you’re looking for. In fact, totally by coincidence, the numbers in the example work out the same for 1 gram of 70% THC hash oil as for 7 grams of 10% THC mids, so your answers are already done! Nugs and hugs!
